ဗာဟုသစၥမဂၤလာ ( ဗဟုသုတရွာပါ)

7 To have vast learning.
A learning process is to gain knowledge, skill and wisdom. Knowledge is for information, skill is for application and wisdom is for making wise judgment in using them. The first two are needed for doing something skillfully, for which reason it is useful as an asset in livelihood. Learning for knowledge in a conducive cause that is always good, the more the better. People with wide range of knowledge will be called learned, but only those who can use it wisely benefiting self and others are the wise ones.

There are instances where learned people will apply their knowledge and skill for personal benefits, but causing danger the life and property of many other people, such as technologies of destruction, creating profits by exploitations etc. These are examples of knowledge and skill without wisdom in the person. Therefore, we should remember that not every learned is wise.

Learning comes by three methods - from a teacher, from reading/seeing other’s work, and from listening to what others talk. But learning requires attention and intention. If not so, the information will just pass by without retaining, and become useless.

In the process of learning from a teacher, one should be humble and respectful, follow the instruction well, recite or memorize the facts, recall and revise, and if not clear about the fact be prompt to question. This is the real method of learning. The source of knowledge or skill one has acquired should never be ignored or be ashamed when asked to be mentioned. False modesty can make one an ungrateful liar committing a grave moral sin.
A person with vast learning is the source of knowledge and wisdom that could benefit many. He will be well respected, and stand tall in any community and society. Fame and reputation of his wisdom will spread far and wide, and could lead to honorable recognitions. Fragrance of flower goes downwind only, whereas reputation of man goes in all direction carried by people. Therefore, to have vast learning is blessing.
