Do it yourself

The Bottle of Medicine

Once there was a sick man. He  went to see a doctor who told him to stay in bed for a few days and take some medicine. The doctor then gave him a bottle of medicine. The doctor then give him a bottle of medicine.
When the sick man returned  home, he did  the doctor ordered and went to bed, but did not take the medicine. He just looked at the bottle.

Days passed. The sick man did not get well. He thought the doctor was not any good and the medicine worthless. But the he then noticed that there were some detailed instructions written on the bottle.
" Ah !" he exclaimed. " I forgot to read the instructions on the bottle!" He then read the instruction there time a day, every day, but still he did not get well. He became more and more unhappy.

But there was nothing wrong with the doctor, nothing wrong with the medicine. The real problem was  that he did not have the common sense to follow the doctor's advice and take his medicine.
In the same way, we are like that sick man. We are "sick" with the diseases of  the mind,  which are greed, hatred and delusion. We got to see a "doctor", who is the Buddha, and he gives us some "medicine" to take, which is his teachings. But if we study his teachings only and do  not put them into use, then we, too, like the sick man, will never be able to get " well"
