A good
advice is learning something that is beneficial for someone to get out of
danger and problem. It could be a “word of reason” that is more valuable than a
precious gift. At times, it may be just like a bitter medicine, hard to swallow
for a person particularly when it is against his wish and desire. It becomes a
crucial decision for him when this good advice or word of reason, though it is
true and beneficial, is contradicting his opinion. Only the wise is amenable to
such decisions.
It is a
human nature to have wish and desire (Lobha) and attachment to it (Tanha). But
one has to differentiate of these desires and attachments are right or wrong,
harmful or harmless. Having them on wrong and harmful things can be the cause
of danger to self or others. If the person has mindfulness to realize the
mistake, and the will power to stop these feelings, problem will not arise.
For a person
in such situation, there is a real need for word of reason or good advice from
someone to prevent him from getting into problems and dangers. It is usually
the friends and mentors who will don this taking the risk of rejection and
anger. Only true friends will do this. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
To be
amendable to reason is the quality of a wise who, who will take it seriously,
foresee the danger, evaluate the situation and calculate the risk when he hears
the word of reason. The wise has the knowledge and ability to analyze things in
a correct way. Even the learned lacking in wisdom cannot do it easily when the
force of desire is stronger than the power of reasoning. This is how great
people fall from grace and fail in their lives.
Inability to
listen to reason is mostly due to conceit and arrogance ( Mana) that makes a
person blind to the reason, stuck in his ego. He may even go against it
deliberately fuelled by his conceit. They will collect little sympathy or pity
from others on such foolish deed. Therefore, to be amenable to word of reason
and good advice is blessing.
