THUS I HAVE HEARD

Whatever evil you do,
That evil defiles you.
Whatever good you do,
That indeed purifies you.

Purity and impurity depends on you
No one else can do that for you.

Let one first establish oneself in good
And then advise the others to be good.
Set an example by practicing the advice.
That is the hallmark of the wise.

Punishment causes fear in all
Life is dear to one and all.
Compare others with your own self
And refrain from striking or causing to strike.

A colorful flower devoid of scent
is certainly not of much need.
Empty and futile are pleasant word
If they are not turned into deeds.
